The CDA has slowly grown to become a voice for the community to lobby our public representatives, on issues that affect the town at present and going forward. This includes the issues of Irish water and the town sewage scheme as well as the new town development plan.
Along with these the CDA works closely with Cork County Council (CCC), local politicians and government departments to further improve the town. Last year alone, we received €100,000 from the CCC Municipal District Community Fund Scheme which went towards the development of a new public car park for the west end of the town. In previous years, the CDA have secured funding from the same scheme to refurbish the Public Toilets and the local Community Playground.
The CDA have also recently acquired, the former St. Peters Church, from the Church of Ireland. The church and grounds are one of the only green spaces in the town and we feel it will be a huge asset to the community. Our hopes are to turn this into a community centre functioning as a multi-purpose building and public garden to hold events for the town. A series of meetings will be organised going forward for the people of Castletownbere to discuss the future of the building to which all are encouraged to attend to have their input.
